They will say Thursday, sometime between two and eight in the evening, when the Town Center at 765 Portola Road pulls off a quiet trick that most Peninsula towns cannot manage. In one continuous four-hour window, the Farmers' Market opens, the Summer Concert Series takes the stage, and the Windy Hill trailheads sit close enough to reach on foot. Everything else on the calendar orbits around that stack.

When the Lower lot fills, which it does quickly on weekends, the market lot is the answer.

Which trail you pick in July and August matters more than the mileage suggests. The full 7.2-mile Spring Ridge to Lost to Hamm's Gulch loop, past Sausal Pond and up to the 1,400-foot summit with views of both the Bay and the Pacific on fog-permitting days, is the postcard route. In summer heat, it is also the wrong choice for late morning.

The preserve opens 30 minutes before sunrise. On concert Thursdays, the sequence that works is a shaded hour on Hamm's Gulch in the late afternoon, back to the market by five, dinner at six, music until eight. Windy Hill was, for what it is worth, the first land protection project the Peninsula Open Space Trust ever completed, back in 1981, and the 1,335 acres are still managed by Midpen. The town's identity is stitched to that ridge in a way the property values reflect but the daily rhythm explains better.

A practical tip from residents who do this weekly: park at the Town Center, walk the Portola Trail to the Lower Windy Hill trailhead, hike, and come back down to a market that is already set up. You never move your car twice.

The One Saturday That Breaks the Pattern

Thursday is the pattern. Saturday, August 29, 2026, is the exception. The fifth-annual PV Palooza runs 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM at the Portola Valley Town Center, free, all day, all local. It is the one date on the summer calendar where the town center scales up rather than staying intimate.

If you have lived here through prior years, you already know the parking calculus. If you are newer, treat Palooza the way you would treat a home football Saturday in a college town. Walk in if you can. The Town Center sits on the Safe Routes to School network that the town publishes, connecting the schools, Town Center, and Ford Field on a car-less path. Most of Portola Valley is closer to the Town Center on foot than the drive time suggests.

Between the concert series Thursdays and Palooza, the town's summer music calendar is entirely free and entirely walkable. That is unusual for the Peninsula, and it is worth pointing at directly, because the generic version of this post lists events without noticing that.

Coal Mine Ridge, for the Thursday You Skip

Some Thursdays you will not want the crowd, small as it is. That is what Coal Mine Ridge Nature Preserve is for. The town maintains a separate trail map for it, distinct from the Windy Hill system, and the Blue Oaks trails offer a shorter, quieter loop that most people driving through Portola Valley never see. Coal Mine Ridge is the answer to a specific question. If you have already done Windy Hill twice this week, if the market feels social when you want solitude, if a guest wants a walk that ends in under an hour, this is where you go. It is not a substitute for Windy Hill. It is the counterweight that makes the Thursday stack sustainable across a full summer.

What Residents Actually Do With This

The reason to map summer this precisely is that Portola Valley rewards residents who use it the way it was designed. The Town Center was built to concentrate civic life onto a single lawn on a single afternoon. Windy Hill was preserved to keep the ridge behind that lawn walkable in perpetuity. The Farmers' Market and concert series were scheduled to overlap on purpose. Palooza was scaled to be the one day of the year the town invites everyone in.

None of this is hidden. All of it is easy to miss if you approach the calendar the way most Peninsula suburbs work, which is as a list of separate outings that require separate drives.
