If you have lived in Woodside long enough, you have probably made this mistake once. You load the dog into the car on a Saturday morning, head for Wunderlich County Park because it is the trailhead everyone defaults to, and get turned back at the entrance. Wunderlich does not allow pets. Neither does Huddart Park, up Kings Mountain Road on the other side of town. The one trailhead that will actually take your dog sits off La Honda Road, with parking for exactly five cars and one ADA space.

This is the thing about the three wild spaces that ring Woodside. From a map, or from the outside, Huddart Park, Wunderlich County Park, and Thornewood Open Space Preserve look like the same offer repeated three times: hills above town, redwood canopy, a few miles of trail. They are not the same offer. Each one is built around a different visitor, and the difference has nothing to do with scenery and everything to do with what you are bringing with you.

The three parks, side by side

Here is what actually separates them, drawn straight from each park's own rules.

Look at that table and a pattern jumps out. Every park says yes to something and no to two other things, and the three of them never overlap on the same yes. If you have a dog, exactly one option exists. If you have a bike, exactly one option exists, and it is a different one. If you keep a horse, Wunderlich is where the infrastructure actually lives.

The dog answer surprises people

Thornewood is the only one of the three that allows dogs, and it allows them on a fairly specific basis: a 6-foot leash, or a self-retracting leash locked to 6 feet whenever another visitor is nearby, with a limit of three dogs per person. The preserve is also the smallest by a wide margin, a 167-acre property tucked between Interstate 280 and Skyline Boulevard, reached through a brick gate on La Honda Road about 1.6 miles past its intersection with Portola Road. Its two trails, the Bridle Trail and the Schilling Lake Trail, run about three-quarters of a mile each and connect at Schilling Lake, a still, tree-lined pond that gives the whole hike its destination.

The catch is the parking lot. Five regular spaces and one ADA spot serve the entire preserve, which means a park built for the one thing every dog owner in town needs is also the hardest of the three to actually get into on a Saturday morning. Weekday mornings or early weekend starts are the practical workaround, not a nice-to-have.

Huddart is the one that lets you bike

Cycling is allowed at Huddart, on designated trails, which makes it the default answer for anyone in Woodside who wants two wheels under them rather than boots. At 973 acres and 24 miles of trail, it is also the largest of the three by trail mileage, with terrain that ranges from the flatter Richard's Road, a converted 1850s logging route that once carried lumber down toward Redwood City, to steeper single-track higher up. Parking runs $6, and the lot fills quickly on weekends, so an early arrival buys more than just a closer spot.

Wunderlich, by contrast, closes its gates to bikes entirely. If cycling is the plan, Huddart is not one option among several. It is the option.

Wunderlich is a horse park that also allows hiking

It is easy to file Wunderlich under generic hiking terrain, but the park's whole identity runs through the Folger Stable, a working equestrian facility offering boarding, horse care, and a groomed sand riding arena suited to dressage, jumping, and cutting. The stable buildings themselves have been restored and sit on what was once the Folger family ranch, the same Folgers of the San Francisco coffee business, before Martin Wunderlich bought the land in November 1956 and deeded 942 acres to San Mateo County in 1974.

Huddart supports horses too, with tie racks at its restrooms and limited trailer parking off Kings Mountain Road, but it has no stable and no boarding. If you keep a horse and need somewhere to house it, Wunderlich is the only one of the three built for that.

Hikers are welcome at Wunderlich, but they are sharing the property with boarders in a way that does not happen at Huddart or Thornewood. Trails higher up the mountain pass a trail junction marked by a pair of benches and known as The Crossroads, then connect to the Skyline Trail and eventually to Huddart itself, a route trail racers use each year for the Woodside Ramble, an ultramarathon and half marathon event that runs through both parks on the same course.

What to check before you drive up

Given how differently the three parks are set up, the fastest way to avoid a wasted trip is to match the outing to the constraint, not the other way around:

Bringing the dog. Thornewood only, on a 6-foot leash, and go early. Five parking spaces disappear fast.
Bringing a bike. Huddart only. Wunderlich and Thornewood both prohibit cycling.
Riding or boarding a horse. Wunderlich, where the Folger Stable is set up for it, though Thornewood's Bridle Trail also permits equestrian use.
None of the above, just a hike. Any of the three works, so pick based on parking cost and crowd. Wunderlich is free and larger. Huddart runs $6 but has more trail mileage. Thornewood is free but tiny and often full.

Filoli fills in the evenings while all this changes for fall

The parks handle the daytime side of a Woodside weekend, and right now Filoli is handling the evenings on a schedule worth knowing if you have not looked at the calendar lately. Summer Nights, the estate's Wednesday and Thursday evening series with live acoustic music and garden access after regular hours, runs through September 17 this year, with tickets at $45 for adults, $25 for members, and $10 for children ages 5 to 17. That gives the season about two more weeks before it closes.

The historic house closes for one day, September 9, as staff prepare for Fleurs de Villes: The Gilded Age, a floral exhibition featuring mannequins inspired by the HBO series and on view through September 18. Once that closes, Filoli shifts into its fall evening format, Nightfall, which returns September 26. Where the three trailheads converge

Whichever park you picked that morning, Woodside's small food scene is the one part of the day that does not split three ways. The Village Pub, a one-Michelin-Star restaurant that has been open since 2001 and also holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award, anchors the fine-dining end of town. The Village Bakery and Cafe covers the casual middle ground, lunch through dinner with weekend brunch and a patio that fills up after a morning on the trails. The Firehouse Bistro, the newest addition to Woodside's restaurant lineup, brings a French comfort food menu and a full bar to the same short stretch of town.

None of the three restaurants care whether you came from Huddart, Wunderlich, or Thornewood. That is the part of a Woodside weekend that stays simple, even when the parks around it do not.

The actual takeaway

The three parks are not interchangeable versions of the same hike. They are built around three different uses, dogs, bikes, and horses, and the town's whole system of public land only makes sense once you know which constraint applies to your Saturday. That is the kind of detail you only pick up by living here, or by getting turned back at a gate at least once.
