By the third week of July, the walk down Hopkins Avenue had stopped being an event and started being a habit. Folding chairs came out of garages without discussion. Someone's kid rode ahead on a bike. Nobody checked a calendar, because nobody needed to: Stafford Park was six or eight minutes away on foot, and Wednesday meant music.

That habit just ended for the year. The last Wednesday show at Stafford Park was August 19, and the last Friday show downtown wrapped a couple of weeks later, on September 4. If you live in Mount Carmel, the season is officially over, which makes this the right moment to say the thing about it that doesn't show up in the concert listings: the reason the Wednesday routine felt so different from the Friday one had nothing to do with the bands. It had to do with an address.

The Address Nobody Mentions

Stafford Park sits at 2100 Hopkins Avenue, on the corner of Hopkins and King Street, just past the northern edge of the neighborhood grid. It is not a road you drive to reach. It is a walk of a few blocks past homes that share the same early-1900s vintage as the rest of Mount Carmel's housing stock, the kind of walk that stays residential the whole way. That is the detail most guides to this stretch of Redwood City skip past on their way to describing tree canopies and walkability scores: the city's summer concert park is close enough to feel like an extension of the block, not a destination you drive to.

Compare that to the Friday series, Music on the Square, which runs at Courthouse Square, 2200 Broadway, in the heart of downtown. That is a fine walk too, but it is a walk out of the neighborhood. The Wednesday series never asked residents to leave home. This year marked the 20th season of the city's summer programming overall, and the two series ran on almost identical logic, free, weekly, outdoors, but they pulled from two different sides of town.

The Walk Down Hopkins

Mount Carmel is compact, just over half a square mile, bounded loosely by Whipple Avenue, Myrtle Street, Jefferson Avenue, and El Camino Real. Inside that footprint, the streets run in alphabetical order, starting at Arch and working through to Upton, a naming convention nobody plans a visit around but everyone who lives there eventually notices.

The walk to a Wednesday show tends to cross a few landmarks that have nothing to do with music. Near Brewster Avenue, across from the main entrance to Sequoia High School, there is a small triangular parklet, grass-covered and lined with low concrete walls, where students have gathered between classes for years. A branch of Redwood Creek, the Arroyo Ojo de Agua, runs through the southeast part of the neighborhood, mostly unnoticed until you are stepped over its culvert on the way somewhere else. And the neighborhood takes its name from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the parish that has anchored this pocket of Redwood City since long before any of the current housing stock went in. None of that is concert trivia. It is just what is actually on the route, which is the difference between a neighborhood you pass through and one you live inside.

Sequoia High, whose entrance sits on Brewster Avenue, was founded in 1895 and is the oldest high school in San Mateo County, which gives that little parklet across the street a longer history than almost anything else on the walk.

What Actually Played This Summer

The 2026 lineup at Stafford Park ran ten Wednesdays, each one a different act:

The city runs it as Music in the Park, free, six to eight in the evening, with a concession tent for the nights nobody felt like cooking. The Friday counterpart, Music on the Square, opened its 20th season with a Santana tribute called Carnaval and closed it with a soul act called Pride & Joy, fourteen straight weeks. Both series are done for the year. Neither address changes before next summer.

Where Dinner Landed

For residents who turned a Wednesday into a full evening, the walk often continued past the park toward Broadway, where the neighborhood's dinner options sit within reach of downtown proper. Mazra, at 2021 Broadway, has been a fixture since 2005, its founders having grown up in their father's Middle Eastern grocery, Green Valley Market, before opening a restaurant of their own. It closed in June 2024 after a kitchen fire and reopened that October, back to grilling everything over mesquite charcoal the way it always had.

A few blocks over, Broadway Masala has built a following for Michelin Guide-recognized Indian cooking, just steps from the Caltrain station. Limón, the neighborhood's Peruvian option, opened its Redwood City location in October 2024 and has become the ceviche destination for people who want dinner to feel like an occasion without leaving town for it. None of these three require a special trip. They are simply what is already there, the same way Stafford Park already was.

The Season That Just Ended, and What Comes Next

With both concert series closed for the year, the neighborhood's calendar does not go quiet. It shifts toward downtown for a different set of dates. Fiesta Patrias lands September 13. Oktoberfest takes over Redwood City from September 22 through 27. Port Fest follows in October, with the date still to be finalized as of the city's season announcement. The Zoppé Family Circus sets up in the library parking lot from November 6 through 29.

Every one of those events pulls in the direction Music on the Square did all summer, toward downtown, away from the neighborhood's own edge. That is the pattern worth sitting with now that the Wednesday routine has ended: for ten weeks, Mount Carmel residents got a concert series that stayed a short residential walk away, while every fall event on the calendar asks for the longer trip toward Broadway instead. It is not a complaint. It is just the shape of the year, and it is useful to know which nights stay close to home and which ones require the trip.
