Ask a longtime Redwood Shores resident where to buy produce on a Friday and they'll send you to the same parking lot they've been going to for years: the Redwood Shores Branch Library on Marine Parkway, where the West Coast Farmers Market Association sets up stalls every Friday from 3 to 7pm. It's the market people mean when they say "the farmers market," the one timed for the after-work crowd heading home along Marine Parkway before the weekend starts.

What most of those same residents haven't clocked is that Saturday morning now has its own market half a mile away, inside the office park everyone's been arguing about for the past two years. The Friday market didn't get replaced. It got company, on a day that doesn't overlap, from a source nobody would have predicted.

The Friday Market Everybody Already Pictures

The library lot market is the neighborhood's default answer to "where's the farmers market," and for good reason. It runs year-round, every Friday, in the same spot at 399 Marine Parkway, timed to catch both the dinner crowd and the office workers filtering out of the surrounding business parks. It's the kind of fixture that stops registering as news because it's simply always there.

That's precisely why the second market matters. It didn't take the Friday slot. It claimed a day the neighborhood wasn't using for this yet.

The Saturday Market Growing Out of the Most Contested Property in the Shores

If you've followed local coverage of Redwood LIFE, you know it mostly as a fight. Longfellow Real Estate Partners wants to redevelop the 84-acre office campus off Marine Parkway, an aging 20-building complex from the 1990s, into a life sciences campus of more than 3 million square feet. The city's environmental review and precise planning process has been underway since 2023, with adoption expected around late 2026, and residents through groups like Save the Shores have pushed back hard on the scale of the project and its footprint over a capped former landfill.

Whatever you think about the size of that fight, here's the part that hasn't made the headlines: while the zoning question sits unresolved, the campus already runs a Saturday farmers market that has nothing to do with the outcome. Roots Farmers Market sets up every Saturday from 9am to 1pm at 1300 Island Dr, at the corner of Marine Parkway and Island Drive, rain or shine. The vendor list reads like any established weekend market:

Hummus Heaven for house-made hummus and pita
Alexandre Dairy for dairy products
Gardner Minerals, an unusual addition selling sustainably sourced rocks and minerals

The campus also opened The Hollo Café on-site, serving contemporary fare made with local produce from 8am to 2pm most days. None of this required the redevelopment fight to resolve first. It's already operating on ground whose long-term future is still being decided by the city council.

The practical upside is obvious once you see it laid out: a resident who used to plan one grocery stop into the week now has two, on mornings and evenings that don't compete for the same slot.

This Past Summer Showed How Far the Split Has Gone

The markets are the clearest evidence, but they weren't the only thing happening on that stretch of Marine Parkway this year. This summer marked the 20th season of Sounds of the Shores, the free concert series the city and the Redwood Shores Community Association put on at Marlin Park. Three Saturday evenings, June 20, July 18, and August 8, brought bands including Sonic Addiction and Misspent Youth to the lagoon-side lawn, with food trucks parked nearby for anyone who didn't want to cook.

Over at Redwood LIFE, The Hollo ran its own weekly draw from May through August: a Wednesday happy hour from 3 to 7pm paired with a summer live music series. Neither event depended on the other, but together they meant a resident could reasonably plan a Wednesday evening and three separate Saturday nights around two different addresses inside the neighborhood, something that wasn't true a few years back when Friday at the library was the only standing appointment on the calendar.

Both series have wrapped for the season now that it's September, but a market with two decades of history behind it isn't likely to skip next summer. The pattern is worth knowing before it starts back up.

What Ties It Together Is the Water, Not the Zoning Fight

The geography helps explain why this split works instead of feeling scattered. Marlin Park, at 500 Cringle Drive, sits on the lagoon with a sandy beach and a launch point for kayaks and paddleboards, feeding directly into the 19 miles of navigable channels that wind through the Shores. Combustion engines aren't allowed on the water, so the lagoon stays quiet enough for rowing and paddleboarding right up against people's backyards.

That lagoon is the connective tissue between the two market days. The library lot sits a few blocks from the water. The Redwood LIFE campus backs directly onto the Belmont Slough side of the same peninsula. Marlin Park, where the summer concerts happen, splits the difference. None of these venues moved to accommodate each other. They just happen to sit close enough that a resident's week can now touch all three without much extra driving.

What This Actually Changes Week to Week

If you've lived in the Shores for a while, the useful update is simple: the neighborhood's shopping and gathering options roughly doubled without anyone announcing it as a change. Friday evening still belongs to the library lot. Saturday morning now has a second option less than a mile away, with its own vendors and its own café for a slower breakfast before or after. Come next summer, expect Wednesday evenings and three Saturday nights to fill back in around The Hollo and Marlin Park, assuming both traditions hold their pattern.

None of this required the Redwood LIFE debate to settle first. The market and the café built out their own rhythm on a campus whose larger future is still working through city review, which is its own kind of local knowledge worth having: the zoning fight and the neighborhood's actual daily life have been running on separate timelines.
