Say "Family Farm" to someone who has lived in Woodside for thirty years, and you will get a pause before the follow-up question: the club, or the road?

Both exist. Both sit off Portola Road, within a few hundred yards of each other. And most people who move into the neighborhood learn only after closing that the two are not the same thing. One is a residential pocket of fewer than a hundred homes, stitched together by dead-end private roads and a Christmas party with no fixed host. The other is a gated, invitation-only men's social club founded in San Francisco in the early 1900s, whose members write and perform their own musical every year in a redwood amphitheater most neighbors will never enter.

They share a name because the club got there first. Understanding the difference explains a surprising amount about what daily life here actually feels like.

The Club That Named the Road

In 1909, a private San Francisco social club called The Family settled on a stretch of redwood and oak forest in Woodside for its rural retreats. The club had formed a few years earlier when a group of newspapermen broke away from the Bohemian Club, and it kept the internal customs that still define it: new members are called "Babies," full members "Children," and the club president "Father." Its rural property, entered at 1400 Portola Road, became known as the Family Farm.

Three years after acquiring the land, club members pooled their own money to build Our Lady of the Wayside Church in nearby Portola Valley. The commission went to a 19-year-old draftsman named Timothy Pflueger, his first project before he went on to shape San Francisco's skyline. Pflueger stayed close to the club and later designed The Tavern, an indoor performance venue on the property that is reportedly still in use today.

That venue matters because of what happens inside it. Every year, club members write and perform an original stage production called the Flight Play, a tradition that has run for generations. One surviving score, composed by Meredith Willson for the 1937 production, predates The Music Man by two decades and was set to be donated to a museum in his Iowa hometown. In 1930, the muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco were guests on the property and, according to accounts of the visit, argued fiercely about art the whole weekend.

None of this happens in your neighborhood. It happens next to it, behind a gate most residents have never been through, on a calendar that has nothing to do with the local email list.

The Neighborhood That Shares the Name

The actual residential Family Farm sits north and east of Portola Road, reached by its own road, and separated from its more famous neighbor by a stretch of woods and a private gate. To its south is Hidden Valley, a sister pocket that residents often mention in the same breath. Together they sit beneath Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, and the lots here regularly run well past Woodside's three-acre zoning minimum.

There has never been a formal homeowners association. What holds the neighborhood together instead is a rotating Christmas party, hosted by a different family each year, and an email list residents use mostly for emergencies. One longtime Hidden Valley resident summed up the appeal in plain terms: you have to like country living to actually live here. On her daily walk along the neighborhood's undulating streets, she says, she sometimes never sees a car.

That is not an exaggeration so much as a description of the road network. Streets off Portola Road here dead-end rather than connect through, which keeps traffic local and makes walking or riding safer than it would be on a through street. It also means turnover is rare. Homes here tend to change hands only when a family is ready to leave entirely, not because a better offer came along down the block.

What Actually Shares the Trail

The animals are not metaphorical. Longtime residents describe a working mix of horses, sheep, goats, chickens, and pigs kept on the larger parcels, and it is routine for neighbors of all ages to cross paths walking dogs along Family Farm Road rather than driving past each other. The wildlife adds another layer entirely. Deer, coyotes, bobcats, blue herons, and red-tailed hawks all show up regularly enough that longtime residents treat sightings as unremarkable rather than newsworthy.

The neighborhood's trail network connects outward to two county parks that most residents treat as extensions of their own backyard: Huddart County Park, with its network of hiking and riding trails, and Wunderlich County Park, home to the restored Folger Estate Stable. Both sit close enough that a morning ride can start at your own gate and end in a working county park without ever touching a paved road.

The Village Errand That Ties It Together

Living in Family Farm means every grocery run, coffee stop, or dinner out means a short drive down to Woodside's tiny commercial core, and that core has had a rough couple of years of its own. Roberts Market, the 137-year-old grocery now run by fourth-generation owner Christine Roberts, remains the only real grocery store in town and functions as much as a gathering spot as a place to buy dinner. Right next to it, Buck's Restaurant and the Village Bakery lost their only outdoor dining spaces in late November 2024, when the property's landlord asked both businesses to remove their pandemic-era parklets while a parking expansion project at Cañada Corners worked its way through approval. At the time, longtime customers called the loss a genuine blow, with one describing Buck's as the heartbeat of the town. Whether the parklets have returned since depends on how that Cañada Corners expansion was ultimately resolved, and it is worth checking current seating in person rather than assuming the old patio setup is back.

That kind of small friction, a temporary loss of patio seating tied to a parking dispute most residents only half-follow, is the texture of actually living out here rather than just owning here. The neighborhood itself stays quiet. The three-block village it depends on does not always stay simple.

What This Actually Means Week to Week

If you live in Family Farm, your week runs on two tracks that rarely intersect. One is entirely private: the horses, the trail walks that end without seeing a car, the Christmas party at whoever is hosting this year. The other requires a short drive into a village with one grocery store, two restaurants that lost their patio seating in a 2024 parking dispute, and no guarantee that seating is back until you see it yourself.

The club next door runs on a completely different calendar, one built around a play only its members will ever see performed. You will likely never set foot inside that gate. But knowing it is there, and knowing it is not yours, clears up a piece of local confusion that even longtime Woodside residents still get wrong at dinner parties.
